About This Data

Where every figure and name on mymalta.fyi comes from, how people were checked, and how to ask for a correction.

What This Site Is

mymalta.fyi is a free, non-commercial website that maps how the Government of Malta is organised: its ministries and the bodies under them, the people who lead them, where the 2026 budget goes, and who sits on each local council.

It is not an official government website. It is not affiliated with any political party, and nothing on it is for sale.

Where the Data Comes From

Government Structure

Ministries, departments, entities and boards come from gov.mt (2026 Cabinet), each ministry's public bodies page, and department websites. Regions and councils come from localgovernment.gov.mt. Some regional groupings look odd (Ħamrun is in the South Region) but are official.

People: Heads, Chairs and Board Members

Names come from each body's official pages, gov.mt and publicservice.gov.mt. Maltese news reports were used only to fill gaps. Many small boards do not publish their members.

Budget 2026

Figures are the 2026 estimates from the Ministry for Finance Financial Estimates 2026. Every line item is checked against the published totals, with no mismatches. Comparisons are against the 2025 approved estimate.

The budget was published before the June 2026 cabinet reshuffle, so it is shown under the ministry names of the time. We have not moved money to the new ministries, because that would mean guessing.

Local Council Boundaries

Council boundaries come from OpenStreetMap, data dated 6 May 2026. © OpenStreetMap contributors. The data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL).

Population

Residents per locality at 31 December 2025, from the National Statistics Office (NSO) news release NR 120/2026, Table 11. The localities add up to 588,254, which matches the national total.

Council Income and Government Allocation

From the National Audit Office (NAO) "Report by the Auditor General on the Workings of Local Government for the year 2024", published November 2025, Appendix A, Table 1.

The map shows two measures, kept separate:

• Total income from each council's audited accounts for 2024. 9 of 68 councils had not filed accounts, so show no figure.
• Government allocation, available for all 68 councils (€47,999,995 in total).

Spending is not published per council, so it is not shown.

Councillors and Parties

Councillors come from the Electoral Commission's 2024 local council election results, which also record resignations and replacements up to August 2026. We then checked council websites and news for later changes. Each councillor is shown with the party they were elected for, not their current views. Vacant or unconfirmed seats are shown hatched.

More on the Council Map

• Housing: dwellings and homes that are not a main residence, from the NSO Census of Population and Housing 2021; new homes approved in 2025, from NSO residential building permits releases (Planning Authority data).
• People, work and learning: share of non-Maltese residents and density (NSO, end of 2025); age, employment, working from home, illiteracy and renting, from the NSO Census 2021.
• Road accidents: NSO road traffic accidents by locality, 2025.
• Crime: a band showing reported offences relative to the national rate per resident, from the CrimeMalta Observatory (University of Malta), 2025. Busy areas rank high partly because crimes are counted where they happen.
• Waste: no official figures exist per town. We show household waste collected by each of the 6 regional councils in January to March 2023, from a parliamentary answer (PQ 8615).
• Bus stops, Starbucks, Lidl, construction sites and buildings: mapped by volunteers on OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), data of 25 September 2026. Places may be missing or out of date, and only a fraction of buildings are mapped, so building counts are not a measure of how built-up a town is.

How We Check People

Sourced or blank, never guessed. Every person on the site has a source link, an as-of date and a confidence level. If we cannot confirm a name or a party, we leave it blank with a note, or mark it "Unconfirmed". We do not fill gaps by assuming.

How the research was done. Every name was collected from official pages, with a source recorded for each. All 242 named heads of bodies were then re-checked against their sources on 24 September 2026: 233 were confirmed, 5 corrected, 2 removed as out of date, and 2 could not be verified. Board members have not been re-checked, and chairs only lightly, so please treat those entries with more care.

Accuracy. This site is compiled from public sources and provided as is, for information only. Despite our checks it may contain errors or be out of date, and we accept no responsibility for any wrong information that entered it during compilation, or for decisions made on the strength of it. Always rely on the official source linked next to each figure or name. If you spot a mistake, please tell us and we will fix it.

Confidence levels.

• High: confirmed by a current official source.
• Medium or low: the newest source we found is older than the June 2026 cabinet, or is not an official source (for example, a news report).

As-of dates. Each entry shows how current its source is. Appointments change monthly, so an older date is a reason to double-check.

Budget Pie: What the Three Views Mean

• Recurrent is day-to-day spending: staff, running costs, programmes and grants to government entities. For 2026 this is €7,813,274,000.
• Capital is spending on investment projects. For 2026 this is €1,123,564,000.
• All spending is recurrent plus capital plus public debt servicing, meaning interest and loan repayments (€1,330,199,000). Total: about €10.27 billion. The official "total expenditure" is lower because it counts only the interest.

Known Gaps

• About 33 entities and 39 departments have no named head.
• Four ministries (MAL, MIPE, MSM, MYWI) publish no list of departments.
• Board members have not been re-checked.
• 9 councils have no 2024 income figure.
• A few council seats are vacant or unconfirmed (Gżira, Marsaskala, Ħamrun, Isla, Siġġiewi, Għarb).
• The list view does not yet show people or budget figures.

Your Information and Your Rights

What we publish about people. The names and public roles of people who head government bodies or sit on public boards, mayors and local councillors, and the party each councillor was elected for. We do not publish contact details, photos, home addresses, ages or anything about private life.

Why, and on what legal basis. So the public can see who runs the Government of Malta and its local councils. Our legal basis is legitimate interests (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)): the public interest in knowing who holds public office. Councillors are shown with the party whose ticket they were elected on: they stood on it in a public election and the Electoral Commission publishes it, so they made it public themselves (Article 9(2)(e)). We do not show the political views of anyone else.

Who can see it. Anyone: this is a public website. It is hosted by Vercel Inc., which stores the files and delivers them to visitors.

How long we keep it. An entry stays while the person holds the role. When we learn they have left it, we remove them at the next update. We do not keep a public history of past office-holders. We review the whole directory at least once a year.

Your rights. If you are named on this site, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, remove it, or hide it while we check an entry you dispute.

Your right to object. You can object at any time to your information being published, for reasons relating to your particular situation. We will then remove it unless there is a strong public interest in keeping it, and we will explain our decision to you.

How to ask. Email aw@mymalta.fyi. We may ask you to confirm that you are the person named, using as little information as possible. We aim to reply within 14 days and will always reply within one month, as the law requires. We cannot remove copies that others have saved or archived.

Complaints. If you are not satisfied with our reply, you can complain to the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) at idpc.org.mt.

Who is responsible. This site is run by a private individual in Malta, who decides what personal information is published here and is the data controller under the GDPR. Contact: aw@mymalta.fyi. The owner will confirm their identity to the Information and Data Protection Commissioner on request, and to anyone named on the site who asks in order to exercise their rights.

Privacy for Visitors

This site sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. It has no analytics, no tracking and no ads. Fonts and the map are served by this site itself, so your browser does not contact any other website unless you click a link to one.

Like any website, our hosting provider, Vercel Inc., briefly records technical data about each request, such as your IP address, in order to deliver the pages and keep the service secure. We do not use this data to identify or track visitors. Vercel acts on our behalf and is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

If you email us, we use your address and message only to reply and to fix the site. We delete them within 12 months of the matter being closed.
